Expressions Partnership

Training in the Construction Industry

Expressions has worked with a wide range of organisations within the construction industry from the small local domestic builder through to global main contractors and everything in between. Frustrated by the view people within and outside of this industry had, there was a need to change this view and enable the industry to step up and be the qualified professionals they are.

Working with a team of senior managers and directors at Galliford Try, Expressions was asked to assist them with leading change within their organisation.

Over two focused workshops the specific change was identified whilst increasing the team’s awareness of the sensitivities to change within the workplace.
The change project was designed, planned and implemented with minimal disruption and maximum adherence.

Leadership and Management Development

Like many sectors technical experts are often promoted internally to become site supervisors, departmental managers and even directors.

Leading and managing in the same way they had been led and managed added to the challenges in a changing climate. Shifting the mind-set of these newer managers has been key over the past few years to change the view of the sector and to attract, train and retain the best talent for the next generation.

Here are just some of the organisations in the construction sector that the Expressions team have worked alongside, and have had the In-House Management Academy programme designed and delivered specificaly to each of them, retaining us as a trusted partner to deliver them over a number of years.

Cultural Architecture

Expressions are proud to be working with one of the country’s leading build-to-rent organisations providing focused development and support for their next growth spurt.

Growth is always accompanied by growing pains as growth requires change and transformation from the old into the new.

There were a number of processes and behaviours that were still fit for purpose in the new chapter and, of course, many that were no longer fit for purpose.
Identifying what was working and what needs working on allowed the organisation to create the right structure for growth and recruit the right talent to make this happen.

Many years invested in working within the construction industry Many years invested in working within the construction industry

Whilst Investors in People practitioners the initial team at Expressions started to work with the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) assisting SMEs to improve their business acumen.

Many of these small to medium size businesses had grown due to the demand for their services, yet there was little if any understanding about how to run a successful and profitable business.

Over the 3-year period Expressions is proud to state that 100% of the construction businesses achieved the coveted Investors in People award and grew sustainable business performance.

Expressions ran a series of strategic sessions and one-to-one coaching with the newly formed senior leadership team to:

  • Process map for improved communication and limited waste
  • Collaborate for a seamless approach to deliver for their valued clients
  • Create an internal Academy identity to develop the talented professionals who contribute to their success providing career progression as well as personal and professional development.

Leading the Way

Working with another construction organisation Expressions designed and delivered a Director's edition of the Management Academy. This is something not many organisations subscribe to despite this being best practice. Not only did this further enable the senior team to collaborate and navigate their organisation it sent a clear message to the middle managers that this was a valuable investment of time, effort and money.

The in-house Management Academy was delivered to multiple groups of Managers and continues to be delivered today.  A company steeped in history and now a 4th generation family business Expressions assisted the strategic narrative from humble beginnings to the giant it is today.

As a result, this organisation has a clear vision to navigate towards with everyone on board and playing their part. A set of core values and a wealth of evidence demonstrate how they are now the DNA of their operation and a culture of opportunity for a more sustainable future.

Expressions was also influential in creating the company’s first Management Conference which enabled all Managers to engage with the bigger picture, share and learn with each other and steer the organisation in the right direction.
